The IH Madrid Director of Studies Course
Course description
A 30-hour course designed for experienced EFL teachers who would like to develop their management skills with a view to applying for a senior teaching or management position in a language school, such as Director of Studies, coordinator or senior teacher.
The course is suitable for those who already hold a similar position but would like to develop their teacher skills in managing teachers and resources.
The course aims to give an overview of what can be expected in a DOS's job, and sessions are designed to give participants the opportunity to experience being in a senior role. It also aims to provide an introduction to the theory and practice of being a DOS or similar senior position in a language school through an interactive and participatory programme of seminars and tasks.
Course content
Sessions are based around three core areas. Managing ourselves, managing others, and managing the centre. The sessions are designed to meet the specific needs of the course participants and typical sessions are:
• Responsibilities, qualities and skills of the Director of Studies
• Developing and managing yourself
• Managing teachers
• Observing teachers and giving feedback
• Organising teachers' meetings
• Human resources
• Coursebooks, curriculum and syllabuses
• Exams, testing and evaluation
• Courses including Young Learners and Business English
• Giving progress & development interviews
• Timetabling teachers & classes
• Dealing with clients, students and parents
• Managing resources
• In-service teacher training
Course Assessment
The course will be given and assessed by Directors and Directors of Studies of International House Madrid. The tutors have a wide range of experience in the organisation and running of a language school.
Certification
On completion of the course, participants will receive the International House Madrid
DOS Certificate with a report on their progress and participation throughout the course.
Entry requirements
We expect you are an experienced teacher with a recognized EFL qualification in teaching English as a foreign language to adults or children. The course is open to native and non-native teachers with an advanced level of English who are about to enter or have recently entered a post which involves managing teachers.
